The power of X

Little I knew, small cards, which are stuck everywhere in the house can make such a difference. The difference of X.

After following the advised from the Reddit post, I got my own cards to developed the habbits. I am following those from last one week, and result is unimaginable. It feels I got very different will power to keep doing the things. Difference between doing and not doing is only a marker X. But for me, this is driving me to overcome everything. Today, one of pending task was to write for 15 mins atleast. It's 11pm here right now, and I just came from friends party. I came early because I really wanted to finish the task of writing and then I could see myself sleeping relaxed thinking I did everything I wanted to do it today.

A lot more changes are coming. Changes I wanted and I needed. I am looking forward to remaining days of my habbit building, and show you in the end what and how I achieved.

How all did started?

Sometimes it take time for self realisation, and sometimes once you realise the things, it takes time for it to put into action. The second stage is the one which is more dangerous to us. Dangerous, since it the period of denial. This denial causes you more trouble than the trouble you were facing before self realisation.

During this period, you feel more frustrated, because you know things are not going correct, but at the same you are not doing anything to correct it. It will only change, if you stop everything, and take out your time to put down all your issues on the table and start tackling one by one, step by step. This is what I started doing very recently. And there is no feeling better than seeing your improve. Seeing you improve where you need that you needed to improve.

I came across two very amazing posts from my favorite website Reddit. And it gave me all the push I needed it to do it. Here are they, sharing my best learning from the internet. If you think, or even if you don't think you are going through such state, please do read it. I am sure you will have more self realisation.

That awesome feeling :)

A New Begining - Getting disciplined

It's been exactly 1 year, 3 months and 5 days I wrote my last blog post. Why I stopped, I really don't know. But I can surely say, laziness has been one of bigger reason. Lately this laziness brought much more trouble than I could handle, and I had it enough. I had to do something, and thus began process of my introspection.

After 5 long days of thought process, 10s of pages of scribbling down, finally I put down plan for my self. Plan to get myself disciplined. Thanks largely to one of my favourite website Reddit. I followed a lot of posts on Reddit on getting disciplined and getting motivated, and few posts helped to draw plan for myself.

Today was first day for me, and for my two best buddies Rahul and Manish to get disciplined. I will write sometimes about it, how I came to that plan. But for today, I will rather talk about one specific item from that plan, and that is to write daily, for 15 mins atleast.

Sometimes back I came across amazing post on Reddit on how to improve writing skills, and I have to share it here. I will write atleast one paragraph, sticking to the advise which was given in the post. So here it goes, the same advice from the post of Reddit;

Tips to improve writing:

Tip 1: Read out Loud
To read your work loud. Reading loud catches the mistakes which your eyes don't

Tip 2: Rhythm and Flow
It has taken from the advice by Gary Provost. In his own exact words, the importance of Rhythm and Flow;

'This sentence has five words. Here are five more words. Five-word sentences are fine. But several together become monotonous. Listen to what is happening. The writing is getting boring. The sound of it drones. It’s like a stuck record. The ear demands some variety. Now listen. I vary the sentence length, and I create music. Music. The writing sings. It has a pleasant rhythm, a lilt, a harmony. I use short sentences. And I use sentences of medium length. And sometimes, when I am certain the reader is rested, I will engage him with a sentence of considerable length, a sentence that burns with energy and builds with all the impetus of a crescendo, the roll of the drums, the crash of the cymbals–sounds that say listen to this, it is important.'

Tip 3: Show, Don't tell
It is so good that I have to put it here the way it is. And it comes from the person named Chuck Palahniuk.

“In six seconds, you’ll hate me. But in six months, you’ll be a better writer.
From this point forward—at least for the next half year—you may not use “thought” verbs. These include: Thinks, Knows, Understands, Realizes, Believes, Wants, Remembers, Imagines, Desires, and a hundred others you love to use.
The list should also include: Loves and Hates. And it should include: Is and Has, but we’ll get to those later.
Until some time around Christmas, you can’t write: Kenny wondered if Monica didn’t like him going out at night…”
Instead, you’ll have to Un-pack that to something like: “The mornings after Kenny had stayed out, beyond the last bus, until he’d had to bum a ride or pay for a cab and got home to find Monica faking sleep, faking because she never slept that quiet, those mornings, she’d only put her own cup of coffee in the microwave. Never his.”
Instead of characters knowing anything, you must now present the details that allow the reader to know them. Instead of a character wanting something, you must now describe the thing so that the reader wants it.
Instead of saying: “Adam knew Gwen liked him.” You’ll have to say: “Between classes, Gwen had always leaned on his locker when he’d go to open it. She’s roll her eyes and shove off with one foot, leaving a black-heel mark on the painted metal, but she also left the smell of her perfume. The combination lock would still be warm from her butt. And the next break, Gwen would be leaned there, again.”
In short, no more short-cuts. Only specific sensory detail: action, smell, taste, sound, and feeling.
Typically, writers use these “thought” verbs at the beginning of a paragraph (In this form, you can call them “Thesis Statements” and I’ll rail against those, later). In a way, they state the intention of the paragraph. And what follows, illustrates them.
For example: “Brenda knew she’d never make the deadline. Traffic was backed up from the bridge, past the first eight or nine exits. Her cell phone battery was dead. At home, the dogs would need to go out, or there would be a mess to clean up. Plus, she’d promised to water the plants for her neighbor…”
Do you see how the opening “thesis statement” steals the thunder of what follows? Don’t do it.
If nothing else, cut the opening sentence and place it after all the others. Better yet, transplant it and change it to: Brenda would never make the deadline.
Thinking is abstract. Knowing and believing are intangible. Your story will always be stronger if you just show the physical actions and details of your characters and allow your reader to do the thinking and knowing. And loving and hating.
Don’t tell your reader: “Lisa hated Tom.”
Instead, make your case like a lawyer in court, detail by detail.
Present each piece of evidence. For example: “During roll call, in the breath after the teacher said Tom’s name, in that moment before he could answer, right then, Lisa would whisper-shout ‘Butt Wipe,’ just as Tom was saying, ‘Here’.”
One of the most-common mistakes that beginning writers make is leaving their characters alone. Writing, you may be alone. Reading, your audience may be alone. But your character should spend very, very little time alone. Because a solitary character starts thinking or worrying or wondering.
For example: Waiting for the bus, Mark started to worry about how long the trip would take…”
A better break-down might be: “The schedule said the bus would come by at noon, but Mark’s watch said it was already 11:57. You could see all the way down the road, as far as the Mall, and not see a bus. No doubt, the driver was parked at the turn-around, the far end of the line, taking a nap. The driver was kicked back, asleep, and Mark was going to be late. Or worse, the driver was drinking, and he’d pull up drunk and charge Mark seventy-five cents for death in a fiery traffic accident…”
A character alone must lapse into fantasy or memory, but even then you can’t use “thought” verbs or any of their abstract relatives.
Oh, and you can just forget about using the verbs forget and remember.
No more transitions such as: “Wanda remembered how Nelson used to brush her hair.”
Instead: “Back in their sophomore year, Nelson used to brush her hair with smooth, long strokes of his hand.”
Again, Un-pack. Don’t take short-cuts.
Better yet, get your character with another character, fast. Get them together and get the action started. Let their actions and words show their thoughts. You—stay out of their heads.
And while you’re avoiding “thought” verbs, be very wary about using the bland verbs “is” and “have.”
For example: “Ann’s eyes are blue.”
“Ann has blue eyes.”
Versus:
“Ann coughed and waved one hand past her face, clearing the cigarette smoke from her eyes, blue eyes, before she smiled…”
Instead of bland “is” and “has” statements, try burying your details of what a character has or is, in actions or gestures. At its most basic, this is showing your story instead of telling it.
And forever after, once you’ve learned to Un-pack your characters, you’ll hate the lazy writer who settles for: “Jim sat beside the telephone, wondering why Amanda didn’t call.”
Please. For now, hate me all you want, but don’t use thought verbs. After Christmas, go crazy, but I’d bet money you won’t.
(…)
For this month’s homework, pick through your writing and circle every “thought” verb. Then, find some way to eliminate it. Kill it by Un-packing it.
Then, pick through some published fiction and do the same thing. Be ruthless.
“Marty imagined fish, jumping in the moonlight…”
“Nancy recalled the way the wine tasted…”
“Larry knew he was a dead man…”
Find them. After that, find a way to re-write them. Make them stronger.”

Freedom...

It's been a while I wrote anything on my blog. Today, again, after a long long time I felt like writing. Writing; which I used to do a lot before. So many thoughts had in my mind, clear, free of any prejudice, and I could put it down on Pen. But somehow, lately, I couldn’t write anything. Nothing! Today, I realized the reason. My mind wasn't free, neither my thoughts, what lagging was this Freedom. This 'Freedom' created such a tribulation that I couldn’t figure out what is happening.

I am glad, finally it happened. I fell in love with a girl, still in love with her, and forever will be in love with her. How beautiful and fun she is or was? When I think about us, I always saw her jumping, smiling girl, ton of ideas, and always in good French mood. But in reality, I felt she missed it. How? I am the person as well who just love to smile, be stupid, tons of ideas always thought of implementing but never did it, and just be myself. It all came down to what we both missed, but unknowingly it impacted both of us. It was being social, being at fun place, being at place were everyday looks worth living. It was Freedom of both of us. The only and biggest difference is she had that freedom, and I don’t.

If I think, if I would have been alone, I would have still came to Bangalore and would have got bored of life in Bangalore and I would have carved for Freedom. Now, I am still carving, but I don’t have yet. She, on other hand, she have this freedom and unknowingly sad because of loosing it. Because she is with me, because she is with me, she has to live at place where both of us didn’t want to live. I didn’t realize it correctly until today. It’s all down to Freedom. This is what caused so much of pain, and now it’s time to get it. I know I will get that bastard soon.

But can we survive till then? Can we both realize that both are missing the same thing, and can be together it achieve it? If I gain my freedom, she gains it more. I would be very happy and she would be too. Can we survive this turbulence period, which after passing will be clam we both like? I feel sad to see it now working, but feel so happy to think She would be so happy to have it. At the same time I see both of us, smiling, happy together, enjoying both of our freedom together, and it makes me so happy.
So many equations of life are unfolding infront of me. I see though it more clearly. Life, which typically offers only one thing at a time, it is possible to bend it and get all the things together. Am I paying its cost? Or are we?

I am confused. Very confused. For the first time in life, but leaving behind a mark, which will makes me remember few things very clearly.

This is just what I am thinking. I don’t know right or wrong. I hope I can find the answer. But one thing I know that I feel so happy to see her smiling pictures.

Virtue of knowing yourself

I remember my night, just before my job interview while I was in university. My friends said, Hemant, try to read something, search on internet for what kind of questions they ask. I said, ‘I don’t need to know anything. If they are going to ask anything about me, then I am the one who knows best about me. If they are going to ask anything about my work, then I am the one who knows it best because I am doing that project. So, one should be studying are those who are going to interview me and not me’. I may sounded very arrogant, too confident (over confident), whatever, but I liked myself for what I thought. I got that job, and I am doing still that job it’s different story altogether, but it’s not the thing I want to talk about today. It’s something very inner core of myself.

Always, when in doubt I had three things in my mind;

1. I know this about myself and I already proved it to myself
2. I know this about myself and I need to prove it to myself
3. I don’t know this about myself and I need if my understanding about myself is correct or not

Fortunately, unfortunately I was always stuck in first two regime. Fortunately because it made me very confident guy, unfortunately because in other case just to prove myself, I had to go through extreme and very long lasting pain. To give an example, I knew how the world around me will react if I fail in exam (especially engineering). I deliberately failed in final exams which cost me an year. I could see the world around me changing (as expected) and it took them almost 6-8 years to starting thinking good about me. Till then, I was bad ass, wasted guy, person with no future etc etc. I didn’t bother much about it, because I created that situation around me to check who will act the way I thought will act. And who will be there to say me ‘Hemant, if you are doing something I am sure there is a reason behind it’. There were only two people who said so. They were my Father, and my Mother. Don’t I have a reason to be luckiest person to be on the planet.

Another example; I never used to smoke, but now I am smoker and don’t feel like quitting. I started saying, let me see what happens if I smoke. Probably I will die way sooner than what my parents expect me to live in this world (no one truly wish I that I should live longer except my family), but still I will be happy to live it the way I wanted it. And if I ever be sad, I will sad because I wanted to do few things for me, and I never got chance to do that. But happyness of doing the things for others who deserve it much more than anything else.

That’s the proverb we have which says, ‘learn from others mistakes so that you will not make the same’. Probably I chose the other path to learn many things by myself. Very hard, painful, waste of time sometimes but atleast leaves no doubt in mind.

Today again, I am in midst of this process, to check if I am who I really think about myself. Certainly it is not that the place you want to be, but certainly I know that future after this is going to be so good. It’s painful again, but still so good. Because then tomorrow, I can say, ‘it’s someone else who needs to prepare to know me, and not me. I know everyting about myself’. Again, I am arrogant today, I am over confident today. Maybe I the fool today, but atleast I will not be the fool tomorrow.

I am in love with this line. Life is beautiful but not as much as mind.

Poetry Revisited !

Yesteday I watched latest Bollywood movie “Zindagi Mile Na Dobara” and suddenly felt like writing a poem. So here it goes, what came in my mind.

I don't know if I can translate this my own poem in English, but I will try soon.

Decoding Indians!!!

On the eve of our Independence’s day I promised to write something about my country. Especially when all the time I talk lot of crap about my country! Time couldn’t be perfect since I was watching one of my favorite advertisements about cell phone service provider. Back in good old days, it touched my heart and made me dream. It made me dream to buy a cell phone one day. Today, I was watching the same advertisement again, and realize what makes us Indians Indian. If I think, taking this advertisement in consideration, I can surely say its’ ‘emotions’. After watching the advertisement today, I could feel in the same way, what I felt 10 years back. So here it goes, irrespective of everything, why I feel proud to be born in India and what I have got.

People say we are emotional fools (especially western world), which might be true. Everyone needs something different in their life, but probably we need something which gives reason for our own existence. May be we are one of the rarest species who gets the most important thing needed for human being, the thing called as “Love” and that too without asking for it, from everyone.

India was a country of king and kingdoms, and still today, it is country of kind of “king & kingdoms”. I am king in my own because of all the love I get from my family, from my relatives, from my friends, which makes you feel you are the king of the world. And it doesn’t depends on how much money you have in your wallet, doesn’t depend on if you are extremely good looking or you suck by matter of physical beauty, or if you are CEO or if you are a taxi driver. We all may be earning different money, but we do all earn equal amount of love (it’s a phrase because love cannot be counted). And there is no doubt about it.

We always believe that we live our life for not ourselves but for others. We depend on each other hence “I” will be rarely in our conversation but what we say is “We”. Parents live their life for their kids; kids live their life for their parents, for their friends, and when grow up the same kids live their life for their love, their wife, their kids and circle continues. We are born with the feeling that life is best lived with the people you love and matters, and so as everyone around us. For us what matter is what you get, you have to give it back in this same life. For us, we don’t need retirement benefits, because our retirement is happiness of our kids. Benefits can give you money, but cannot give you love when need most. We believe it’s our job, it’s our duty, it’s our love, and it’s our dharma to give hand to our old parents when they taught us how to take step on this planet. For most of us, life is not profit and lost, but a laugh to be shared with your loved once. We believe we earn people only once and we have to be with them forever.

We may not be polite, we may not say ‘good morning’ to every passing stranger or ‘thank you’ for everything, but at the same time we do not hesitate to give up everything for loved one around us.

I feel very lucky, and probably rest all in India as lucky as me. Reason, I got amazing parents who loves me unconditionally. They loves me from bottom of their heart, scarified their entire life because they though they brought me in this world and now it’s their job to give me best possible thing in world. It doesn’t matter if they don’t have a rupee to spend of them because of me. I got amazing sisters, cousins, relatives, for whom my happiness was more important than anything else. I got amazing friends (probably the guy with most number of best friends in the world). Even they are pissed off for whatsoever reason, but always their shoulder is always there for me. Whatever happens, I know there are and always will be people beside me, and saying “don’t you worry, I am with you”

If you are meeting an Indian, you are meeting an emotional fool. A person for whom life is matter of relations and love we share with each other. And that’s why even to a stranger we greet with ‘relation’ opposed to Mr., Miss, and Sir Etc.
I feel proud and lucky to be born here; the place which makes you thinks not only about you but people around you. It’s India. If I get a million chances, I will still want to be kid of my same parents, still want to be in the same village, and still want to be the guy who I am, and the same people around me.

Having said so, yes, we have lot more to learn from rest of the world. We need to learn. But there is so much NOT to lose. I really hope that one day we will achieve that balance. Keeping what we have and learning from others. And I know, that day, I will say, yes, we are the number 1.

Did I sound very much like typical Indian Yes, because I am.

Happy Independence Day!
